Minnesota is starting to display those tell-tale signs of spring, from fresh blooms to a variety of active wildlife. Put away those winter coats and get out there and enjoy everything your city has to offer. Here is our list of the top four fun spring activities to do in Minneapolis.

  1. Visit the Minnesota Zoo

A trip to the Minnesota Zoo is an excellent excursion any time of year, yet it’s particularly enjoyable during springtime. The warm weather means the arrival of new babies. Stop by the Wells Fargo Family Farm to catch a glimpse of chicks, bunnies, calves, and kids. These are just a few of the spring baby animals you’ll encounter at this park.

Get close to nature without leaving the city during Llama Trek Week, May 25 through Sep. 2. Guests are invited to walk among a herd of free-roaming llamas and other South American animal inhabitants starting this spring. You’ll also see adorable guinea pigs and rheas, a flightless bird. Proceeds from this exciting event benefit wild chinchilla conservation in Chile, and admission is free with your zoo’s general admittance ticket.

  1. Go Fishing

Minnesota doesn’t have a reputation as a premier fishing destination for nothing. Land of 10,000 Lakes and the mighty Mississippi, there’s a good chance there’s a place to fish near you. Now that the ice has thawed, spring fishing is quite enjoyable.

The extended walleye season the Twin Cities area enjoys is the perfect time to cast your line. Warm weather and increased currents mean that the prized fish are beginning their annual run. If you’ve never fished for walleye, you’re in for a treat. They’re fast, and they’re huge. Most anglers choose to jig with minnows this time of year.

Try your luck at the Lake of the Woods, one of the top 10 lakes in Minnesota. You’ll get the opportunity to land a trophy-sized prehistoric lake sturgeon or frisky northern pike.

  1. Tour the Arboretum

Springtime is a natural wonder at The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. This 1,137-acre horticultural garden is located in Chaska at 3675 Arboretum Dr. The arboretum is bursting with life and is particularly vibrant as sunny weather descends on the ground. See colorful bulbs start to push up through the ground and bushes of sweet-smelling honeysuckle and roses start to bloom.

  1. Go Birding

Migrant birds have started their trek home to Minnesota after a long winter soaking up sunshine down south. The area’s colorful feathered friends encompass 260 varieties including both bald and golden eagles. Spot these majestic birds around the bluff at Frontenac State Park, then check out the park’s bottomland forest for a chance to spot warblers.

The Mississippi River is another excellent place to spot spring flocks. Start your journey 10 miles southeast of Red Wing, then head out to Sand Point to see ruddy turnstones and sanderlings.

Spring is a terrific time to enjoy Minnesota. Make plans to take part in one — or all — of these fun and exciting activities near Minneapolis.
