Kia is once again leading the charge into the future of electric vehicles with the upcoming release of the Kia EV4. Set to arrive in the United States following the European launch in the second half of the year, the EV4 is part of Kia’s expanded lineup. The EV6 and EV9 came before it, both innovative and highly successful. With a bold and unique design that we’ve never seen before, Kia hopes to set the stage for the future of vehicle design and performance. Let’s take a closer look at what the EV4 will bring to the road.
Design
Exterior
The exterior design of the Kia EV4 is sure to turn heads and create discussion. Some will love it; some might have another opinion. What we can all agree on is that Kia creates a futuristic design with its low nose and long-tail silhouette. It has vertical headlights on its bold front end, creating a wide body look. The EV4 will come with a sedan and a hatchback option. The sedan has a two-piece spoiler and a longer overhang than what we’re used to seeing on other sedans. Its sister vehicle, the hatchback version, has a sloping, sporty look to it. Both versions have a GT-Line trim level, flush door handles, and unique wheel designs. You’ll also see Dynamic Welcome Lights when you walk up to the vehicle with the key detected.
Interior
On the inside, the Kia EV4 looks just as futuristic as on the outside. You’ll see unique color combinations on the interior seats, with a striking line of color creating a fun and sporty vibe. With Ambient Lighting, you can customize the colors that are underlit across the dash to match your mood or personality. The 1st row will enjoy Kia’s Relaxation Comfort Seats, which automatically adjust to the driver’s body to reduce discomfort. It will recline or move the seat up to ensure you’re in an optimal position, and all you have to do is press a button on your seat. In between the driver and passenger seat, there is a 180-degree folding armrest. You can fold this back and slide the table console forward to get a great surface space if you’re on the go and have to quickly catch up on work or get a bite to eat.
Technology
The Kia EV4’s technological features create a true hub of connectivity and convenience. Drivers have nearly 30 inches of screen space, with a 12.3” digital cluster in front of the driver, a 5.3” air conditioning panel, and another 12.3” for the infotainment screen. Kia’s built-in AI Assistant allows you to say, “Hey Kia,” and ask any question you’d like to get real-time answers and suggestions. With the Digital Key 2.0, your car key is your smart phone (or other device, like Apple Watch) so that you can lock, unlock, or start your car without your fob. This can also be shared with up to 15 devices so that your whole family has access. The i-Pedal 3.0 system uses regenerative braking to improve range. New on the EV4 is the Vehicle Smart TV. This offers a huge range of entertainment options in the vehicle’s display screens, such as YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, games, and more, so that your passengers stay entertained.
Safety
Like the rest of the Kia lineup, the EV4 has a huge offering of safety features. Kia’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) includes Lane Following Assist, Remote Parking Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist. The Hand-On Detection feature monitors when the driver’s hands are on the wheel and gives an alert if it senses no hands on the wheel. Available on the EV4 is a 12-inch Head-Up Display so that your eyes can stay on the road. With the Driving Package F+ (Drive Wise), the vehicle alerts you when a collision is detected and operates evasive driving maneuvers if necessary. The Highway Driving Assistant is also offered, which helps keep a safe distance between you and the driver ahead, keep a set speed, and keep your car in the lane.
Range and Performance
The EV4 is built on Kia’s 400V Electric Global Modular Platform. Both the sedan and hatchback options come with a standard (58.3 kW) or long-range (81.4 kw) battery, which supplies a 150-kW motor. The standard battery will give you 267 miles of range and allow you to go 0-60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The long-range battery gives you 391 miles of range and allows you to go 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds. The hatchback version has a range of 366 miles on a full charge. You can even use the vehicle for things you would need a standard outlet for, like powering appliances when camping, with the car’s 3.6 kVA Vehicle-to-Load functionality. You’ll find the charging door on the passenger side front fender. With rapid charging, you can get 10-80% charged in 31 minutes, or 10-100% charged in 5 hours 20 minutes with AC Charging.
The Kia EV4 is set to redefine what we can expect from electric vehicles, combining bold design, cutting-edge technology, and competitive performance.
